Year 9 students showcase their persuasive speaking skills

Posted on October 15, 2026

Macleans College’s Year 9 students presented their persuasive speeches in the final week of Term 3 - exploring topics ranging from fairy tales and fear to storytelling and appearance.

After months of preparation and practice, the eight finalists shared their ideas with confidence, creativity and a strong ability to engage and challenge their audience.

The Year 9 Persuasive Speech Finals are part of the curriculum and provide students with an opportunity to develop their public speaking skills while exploring issues they find meaningful.

This year’s finalists delivered polished and thought-provoking speeches, engaging the audience and challenging them to consider different perspectives. The strong standard made the judges’ decision a difficult one.

Congratulations to all finalists on their achievement and the commitment they showed throughout the process.

The results were:

First: Michael Song (Kupe House) – Fairy Tales Teach Bad Lessons
Second: Vivaan Malla (Batten) – Fear Isn’t a Myth
Third equal: Caroline Silipa (Hillary) – Storytelling Is Important and Nina Zhang (Snell) – People Care Too Much About Appearance

A warm thank you to the judges, Mr Davidson and Mrs Mair, for giving their time and providing valuable feedback to the students.
