Year 11 students put geography skills into action at Eastern Beach

Last week, 50 Year 11 Macleans College geography students put their learning into practice with their first hands-on fieldwork experience. The visit to Eastern Beach allowed students to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world project while developing key investigative skills.

Their task was to assess the most suitable location for a second boat ramp at the beach. Teachers identified four possible sites for the project. Students visited each location and gathered evidence to determine which site would be most appropriate.

During the investigation, students measured wind speed and direction, recorded the slope of the beach and collected photographic evidence.

The Year 11 Geography course introduces students to the natural processes that shape landforms in New Zealand and around the world. It also explores how different perspectives influence the ways people interact with the natural environment. Fieldwork experiences such as this help students apply their classroom learning to real-world situations.

Back in the classroom, students are now analysing the information gathered during the trip. Using this data, they will develop proposals that identify the most suitable site for the new boat ramp.
