Macleans College students secure two places in national spelling bee final

Two Macleans College students have earned places in the national final of the Aotearoa New Zealand Spelling Bee after an impressive performance at the Upper North Island semi-final earlier this month.

Jhankriti Jhankriti (Batten House) and Celine Moon (Mansfield) were among just three students from the regional competition to qualify for the national final, which will be held in Wellington at the end of October.

The spelling bee is open to Year 9 and 10 students who enjoy language and the challenge of learning new words. It provides an opportunity to develop vocabulary that supports academic learning while testing spelling skills against students from across the country.

Ten Macleans College students qualified for the Upper North Island semi-final, with nine progressing to the oral rounds. The competition was closely contested and lasted three and a half hours, with eight oral elimination rounds required to determine the three national finalists.
