Taiwanese cultural performance engages Macleans College students

Macleans College recently welcomed the Taichung Sheng Wu-Chou Puppet Troupe and their accompanying musicians for a special cultural visit.
The troupe travelled from Taiwan to take part in Auckland’s annual Taiwan Day celebrations. During their time in Auckland, they also shared their skills and experience with the school community.
Mandarin students in Years 9 to 12 took part in interactive classroom workshops. They learned how to operate traditional hand-crafted glove puppets and explored the sounds of Chinese musical instruments - including drums, gongs and cymbals.
At morning interval, students gathered in the Batten House Commons to watch a live puppet performance. The skilled puppeteers presented an imaginative story using expressive movement and music, creating a lively and engaging break-time experience.
For Mandarin learners, the visit provided a valuable opportunity to apply language skills in a practical setting. The hands-on activities supported learning beyond the classroom and deepened the students’ understanding of Chinese culture.
Macleans College is grateful to the troupe for their visit and looks forward to further cultural learning opportunities within the Language Department this year.
