Macleans College students selected for prestigious International Olympiads

Nichole Luo (Kupe House) will compete at the 37th International Biology Olympiad in Lithuania this July.  As part of the selection process, she attended a 10-day training and selection camp at the University of Otago during the April school holidays.  The International Biology Olympiad includes both theoretical and practical assessments.  Theoretical exams cover all areas of biology and require students to analyse complex biological concepts.  Practical assessments involve a series of laboratory tasks, where students conduct investigations and interpret data.

Wesley Lau (Kupe) has been selected for the New Zealand team competing at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad in Uzbekistan in July.  He attended a residential training camp during the recent school holidays, where students took part in lectures and laboratory sessions. Final examinations determined the final team.  Sarah Huang (Kupe) has been named as a reserve.  This global competition brings together students from more than 90 countries. Participants are assessed through challenging theoretical and practical exams that test their knowledge, problem-solving ability and laboratory skills.

Zhiyuan Yu (Hillary) will represent New Zealand at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad in China this July.  As a Year 11 student, Zhiyuan’s selection is particularly notable, as team members are typically in Years 12 or 13.  He attended a training camp in January, where the final team members were selected.  The International Mathematical Olympiad features a demanding two-day examination focused on advanced problem-solving in algebra, geometry, number theory and combinatorics.
