Macleans College students explore the creative world of Wētā Workshop

Wētā Workshop is an internationally recognised creative design and special-effects company.  It is best known for its work on major film productions, including The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Avatar. Wētā Workshop Unleashed gives visitors an interactive insight into the creative processes used to develop characters, props, costumes and sets for film and other forms of entertainment.

During the visit, students explored three film genres and looked behind the scenes at the design and construction of props, costumes and sets. They gained an insight into how creative ideas are developed and transformed into detailed physical designs.

The students then put their own ideas into practice during a 90-minute workshop challenge. They were tasked with creating a scene or set based on their chosen genre and style. The activity encouraged them to apply the design principles they had observed and develop their own creative concepts.

The experience reinforced the importance of careful planning, attention to detail and commitment throughout the design process. Students returned to class with new ideas and a greater appreciation of the creativity and craftsmanship involved in professional design.
