Year 11 students complete challenging Whatipū hiking expedition

The final week of Term 1 saw Year 11 Macleans College Challenge students take on an overnight hiking expedition in the Whatipū area of the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park. The journey tested their physical endurance, teamwork and ability to apply practical outdoor skills in a real-world environment.
The first day covered a demanding 15 kilometre route. Students summited two peaks before stopping for lunch at Windy Point, where they sheltered in one of the area’s large caves. The group then continued with a steep climb to the ridgeline along Gibbons Track, finishing the day at the Pararaha Valley campsite.
Upon arrival, the group welcomed the opportunity to rest. Students set up tents, prepared dinner using gas stoves and organised their gear for the evening. The day concluded with a group session focused on survival equipment and its practical use.
The following morning, students packed up their campsite and ensured all rubbish was removed. They then began a 10 kilometre walk along Whatipū Beach. Although the soft sand made progress challenging, the group maintained a steady pace. Cutter Rock Lighthouse gradually came into view as they approached the end of the journey. The students reached the van tired but satisfied with their achievement.
The expedition provided a valuable opportunity for students to apply knowledge gained in class. They demonstrated resilience, cooperation and a strong sense of commitment throughout the trip. The experience will remain a meaningful highlight of their year.
