Macleans College students build leadership skills through cultural learning

Earlier this month, a group of Year 11 Macleans College students helped bring Matariki celebrations to life by teaching Year 5 and 6 students at Bucklands Beach Primary School how to play the traditional Māori game of Tapu Ae.
The visit gave the younger students the chance to experience an important part of Māori culture, while providing Macleans College students with a valuable opportunity to develop their leadership skills.
In Māori culture, Matariki is the Pleiades star cluster. Its first rising in late June or early July marks the beginning of the Māori New Year and is a time for reflection, connection and celebration.
Tapu Ae is a traditional Māori team ball game in which two teams pass a ball to knock the opposing team's target balls off cones.
Students enjoyed the opportunity to learn, connect and celebrate together in a fun and supportive environment.
The Year 11 students confidently guided the younger students through the game, sharing their knowledge and encouraging participation throughout the session. In return, they strengthened their communication and leadership skills while creating a memorable experience for everyone involved.
