Macleans College student designs official logo for International Young Physicists' Tournament

A creative design by Macleans College Year 12 student Nicholas Yeung (Mansfield House) will soon be seen by young physicists from around the world.
His work has earned international recognition after being chosen as the official logo for a prestigious global science competition.
Nicholas recently won the Fusion Design Competition, organised by the New Zealand Young Physicists' Trust. His winning design will become the official logo for the 40th International Young Physicists' Tournament, to be held in Auckland in July 2027.
Macleans College also celebrated another success, with fellow year 12 student Edward Yeung (Mansfield) receiving an honourable mention for his entry.
The competition invited secondary school students to create a logo that would represent the international tournament, which will welcome teams from across the globe to New Zealand.
Nicholas's design impressed the judges with its clean, modern style and thoughtful symbolism. Created as a continuous line, it evokes the trace of an oscilloscope while also depicting two of Auckland’s most recognisable landmarks, the Harbour Bridge and Sky Tower.
The logo also features a sailboat silhouette representing Auckland as the City of Sails, a wave that reflects both the sea and the wave nature of physics, and the Southern Cross, symbolising New Zealand as the destination for the tournament. The colour palette is inspired by the New Zealand flag, bringing the design together with a strong national identity.
As the competition winner, Nicholas received a Prezzy card, a digital graphics drawing pad and the opportunity to spend a day at Onfire Brand Design Agency. During the experience, he observed professional designers at work and saw how his concept was developed into a complete branding package. He also gained valuable insight into the creative process behind brand identity.
The competition win is an outstanding achievement and a well-deserved recognition of Nicholas's creative talent.
