Sharing culture through food: Intercultural Food Festival 2024

Posted on May 09, 2024

During the final week of Term 1, members from various groups under the Intercultural Committee (ICC) came together to hold the annual Intercultural Food Festival.

Delicious food from all around the world was sold - tteokbokki (Korean rice cakes), tanghulu (Chinese candied fruit), bubble tea, chilaquiles (a traditional Mexican breakfast dish), panikeke (Samoan pancakes), Gulab Jamuns (an Indian dessert) and many more cultural delicacies. Each stall took students on a culinary journey, highlighting the huge diversity at Macleans College and creating a day to remember.

Additionally, the ICC hosted a vibrant intercultural mufti day, encouraging students to proudly wear attire that represented their own cultures or the colours of their national flags. The event showcased an impressive variety of cultural outfits from all around the world.

The day also featured an impeccable and entertaining live dance performance from the Kpop social group; making the event lively and filling the students with high spirits as they showed their appreciation for Korean culture through dance.

Intercultural President Leo Mamedov (Kupe House), and Vice-President Cecilia Ma (Mansfield) worked alongside with the ICC executive team Hannah Liu (Rutherford) and Behrad Etemadipour (Batten) to smoothly manage and coordinate this highly anticipated and popular event.

A huge thank you to all the teachers in charge of the Intercultural Committee for their assistance and support in organising the smooth execution of the Intercultural Food Festival.

All proceeds will be donated to Multicultural New Zealand which is an organisation dedicated to fostering the hauora and kotahitanga among diverse communities in New Zealand. The organisation also provides invaluable assistance to migrants and refugees for their integration process.
