Samoan Language Week celebrated with vibrant cultural events
Posted on June 17, 2025
Macleans College proudly marked Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa – Samoan Language Week - with a series of vibrant cultural events.
This nationwide celebration is an important occasion across Aotearoa, honouring the language and traditions of Samoa.
The 2025 theme 'Ia malu lou sā. Folau i lagimā – a well-grounded self, is a successful self’, deeply resonated with the school community. This powerful proverb draws a beautiful parallel between a meticulously crafted ocean sailing vessel and a person prepared for life's journey. Just as a well-built boat ensures a safe voyage, individuals who prepare thoroughly and with intention become grounded, resilient and well-equipped to navigate life's challenges and achieve success. Even when facing hardships, a firmly grounded and well-prepared person won't be easily shaken.
Macleans College celebrated the week through a series of vibrant activities. These included the annual flag-raising ceremony, a hands-on ula making workshop and a cultural showcase at assembly. Although the Samoan student group is small in number, their spirit and enthusiasm are truly mighty.
The school extends gratitude to all staff and students who participated and supported the events. A special Fa'afetai tele lava to Ms Tuialii and the Samoan students, whose energy and resounding ‘chehoo’ calls created an unforgettable atmosphere across campus.
