Sabre team win gold at the National Fencing Tournament

Posted on September 12, 2022

The National Schools Fencing Tournament took place over the weekend of 2-4 September in Auckland.

Macleans College was represented in both the individual and team events in the foil and sabre categories.

The foilists competed on Friday 2 September. Of the 46 competitors, Larry Lin (Batten House) took overall sixth place, a remarkable achievement for a student who is only in Year 9, and who competed against Year 13 students. Larry practices five times a week and is thoroughly deserving of this wonderful achievement. The Men’s Foil team of Andrew Yao (Upham), Larry Lin, Eddy Zheng (Snell) and Craig Chong (Upham) placed fifth out of nine entries, narrowly losing to Christchurch 45-44.

On Sunday 4 September, the sabreurs took to the piste. Gisele Lau (Te Kanawa) placed second and received a silver medal. The Ladies’ Sabre team of Gisele Lau, Regina Yun (Upham) and Olivia Jiang (from ACG Strathallan) won gold. The Men’s Sabre team of Davin Chan (Batten), Ken Zhong (Hillary) and Nathan Diao (from ACG Parnell) were awarded third place and bronze medals.

Well done to all on these remarkable achievements.
