Year 11 students learn river safety at Wero Whitewater Park

The Macleans College Year 11 Challenge and Mana courses recently visited Wero Whitewater Park to complete a river crossing course.

During the session, students practiced a range of river crossing techniques.  They completed crossings individually, in pairs and in groups of varying sizes.  Methods included triangle formations, side-by-side crossings and the conga line.  These exercises helped students experience the strength of moving water while learning safe crossing strategies.

Instructors also explained what to look for when assessing a river crossing.  This reinforced concepts the students had previously studied in class.  Participants practiced moving together as a group, staying aligned with the river flow and communicating clearly above the sound of the whitewater.

The session concluded with the students practicing safe river floating techniques.

Students enjoyed the experience and left with a strong appreciation of both the power and potential dangers of rivers.
