Radio New Zealand records podcast in Year 13 Media Studies class
Posted on March 17, 2025
Sharon Brettkelly from Radio New Zealand (RNZ) recently visited a Year 13 Media Studies class at Macleans College.
Sharon was recording an episode of daily podcast, The Detail. The episode was focused on the need for media literacy education in the age of the internet.
The episode featured interviews with a group of students about their experience navigating online media spaces. In today’s online landscape, misinformation and disinformation are inescapable, and there are numerous bad actors, or online accounts that spread misinformation, attempting to exploit vulnerable users.
The upcoming National Media Literacy Week in May is raising awareness of the skills required to navigate online spaces in safe and positive ways. Head of Media Studies at Macleans College, Mr Cargill, speaks more about this event and its goals in the podcast.
Some students stayed after the lesson to connect with one of New Zealand’s leading journalists and learn about her role and the opportunities in the industry. Later in the year plans have been pencilled in for a group of students to follow Sharon for the day at RNZ.
