Macleans College competes at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Keelboat Championships

Five students represented Macleans College at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Keelboat Championships, held at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.
The team comprised Madi Russell (Snell House) on main, Tyler Marsh (Mansfield) on trim, Callum Noyer (Mansfield) on helm, Izzy Harrison (Hillary) as float and Lauchy Wills (Rutherford) on bow.
On the first day, conditions were ideal, with an incoming tide, flat seas and a steady 12-17 knot breeze. Macleans College needed a top-five finish to qualify for the Gold Fleet on the final day. The crew sailed consistently, recording results of second place, four third places and a fourth place - finishing third overall in the qualifying round behind Rangitoto College and Saint Kentigern College.
The final day brought a shift in conditions. A 17-23 knot northerly breeze with gusts up to 30 knots challenged the lighter, relatively new combination of Macleans College sailors. Despite this, the team displayed resilience and determination, completing five races against tough competition.
Macleans College finished eighth overall in the regatta. The school congratulates training partners Saint Kentigern College who claimed the overall title.
A special thank you goes to the parents who supported the team on the water by driving support boats throughout the regatta. Their commitment ensured the sailors were safe, supported and able to perform at their best.
Well done to all sailors for their dedication, teamwork and effort throughout the championships.
