Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I trust you are well and coping with the extended lockdown.

The Prime Minister has announced that Auckland schools will be closed on October 18. We will therefore begin Term Four teaching by remote. The Prime Minister will give an update for schools that afternoon. I understand this situation is proving to be very challenging. The uncertainty around the return to school and examinations is unsettling. Our counsellors, House Leaders and Deans are available to speak with should you or your child need.

Supervision at school under Alert Level 3

At Level 3, students who do not have suitable supervision at home may attend school to be supervised. Remote lessons will continue online and school remains closed for most students.

Please email [email protected] with the name of your child if you intend to send your child to school to be supervised.

We anticipate this will be a very small number of students (fewer than 10) and appropriate safety measures will be in place in accordance with the Public Health Order.

Detailed instructions for those students who must attend school for supervision will be provided once attendance is confirmed.

Vaccinations

Vaccination against COVID–19 is now mandatory for all school staff. We are in the process of implementing this mandate and collecting data from staff. Before returning to school all staff will have to present a negative Covid test. This initiative will help keep staff and students safe when we return to school.

We will soon be asking you for the vaccination status of your sons and daughters. We will contact you as soon as we have clear guidance on the evidence and information required. In the meantime, I encourage students to get vaccinated. A higher rate of vaccination will mean less drastic steps need to be taken should we have a positive case on campus.

NCEA Practice Examinations

We are hopeful we will be back on site so that NCEA students can sit their practice exams in school. If not, these exams will take place online in weeks two and three of the term.

Cambridge Examinations

I appreciate this is a stressful time for Cambridge students. I know many of the students have been working hard to prepare for the exams.

At present we have cancelled exams on the 18th, 19th and 20th of October in the knowledge Auckland schools will not be back on site before then. We hope we will be back in school on the 21st. After the 21st some subjects will have missed too many components for students to be able to sit exams and still receive a grade.

If Auckland schools are not back by the 21st our Cambridge students will receive School Assessed Grades. This system has been used extensively by Cambridge around the world over the last 18 months. Under this system the historical grade distribution of the school is used in conjunction with evidence / assessment information gathered from the students. The raw score from school exams is not the SAG awarded.

As soon as we have confirmation of the way forward we will inform you.

Take care and stay safe.

Kind regards,

Steven Hargreaves
Principal
