National finalists at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Case Competition

Posted on August 10, 2023

Two teams recently represented Macleans College at the national finals of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Case Competition.

In this competition, participants vie with other teams to identify and present creative solutions to key issues facing a New Zealand company. With over 130 students across schools in New Zealand and Australia (including several Macleans College teams) participating this year, competition was intense and involved two rounds.

The preliminary round encompassed a week of concentrated groundwork, during which teams submitted in-depth video presentations. These involved a detailed analysis of issues, strategies, and the implementation and financial consequences of said strategies on the Australasian chain, Bunnings Warehouse.

From the initial pool of 130, the top six teams overall were selected for an in-person national final round at Massey Business School. All finalist teams were mentored by professionals at Deloitte prior to their presentation.

Two Macleans College teams, ‘Bob’s Apprentices’ (Cecilia Ma of Mansfield House, Kelly Ma of Upham, Chanel Gao of Te Kanawa and Yunmin Lee of Rutherford) and ‘ALEA’ (Alex Ly of Batten, Leo Huynh of Snell, Eric Deng of Mansfield and Alan Niu of Rutherford) were amongst the top six, and on Saturday 29 July they presented their cases to a panel of judges including esteemed lecturers and industry professionals.

Both teams applied key business, economics, and finance expertise acquired from subjects taken at school as well as through their own extracurricular pursuits.

Thank you to Shafquat Tabeeb (Mansfield) for organising this event.
