Macleans College artists selected for national art awards exhibition

Two Macleans College art students are celebrating national recognition after their work was selected for the 2026 National Secondary Schools Art Awards exhibition.
Alicia Li and Amana Chadha (both of Hillary House) were chosen by a curatorial panel from entries submitted by secondary school students across New Zealand.
Now in its 14th year, the awards exhibition showcases outstanding student artwork at The Arts House Trust, Pah Homestead. Alicia and Amana’s works were selected as finalists and are on display alongside other successful entries.
Alicia’s vibrant botanical drawing was inspired by artist Elizabeth Horning. Bright colours, deep contrasts and blurred edges create a sense of movement and capture the energy of nature.
Amana’s painting, Vahana, is a personal tribute to Nandi - the sacred guardian and faithful mount of Lord Shiva. Nandi represents patience, quiet strength and devotion.
Amana explains that the painting reflects his significance in her faith and heritage: ‘Growing up with his presence in my faith, I painted him emerging from deep shadows into light, adorned in ceremonial regalia and traditional ornament.’
She says the stark white details and steady gaze represent the divine protection and peace associated with Nandi, while the painting provides a connection to her heritage and identity.
The exhibition opened on 10 September and runs until 18 October at Pah Homestead.
