Media Studies students experience the magic behind film and television

Year 13 Macleans College Media Studies students recently spent a day in central Auckland, gaining valuable hands-on experience and insight into the media industry.
Hosted by the Communications Department at Auckland University of Technology, students explored the practical processes involved in live television production. Half the class worked on the studio floor in roles such as presenters, camera operators and auto-cue operators. The other half worked in the control room, managing sound, graphics and live editing.
Students also visited Wētā Workshop Unleashed at SkyCity Auckland. During the guided tour, students explored several areas of film production, including costume design, special effects and prop creation. One section focused on horror filmmaking and the mechanics behind onscreen effects. Other displays highlighted fantasy filmmaking through miniature landscapes, props and costumes inspired by The Lord of the Rings.
The trip gave students practical insight into a range of media production careers and creative techniques. They are now preparing for their own productions - with selected projects to be showcased at the Macademy Awards in Term 4.
