Macleans College students Hayley Xie (Year 13 Upham House), and Abhinav Chawla (Year 11 Snell House) recently represented New Zealand at the second International Economics Olympiad, which was held in St Petersburg, Russia.

The New Zealand team competed in three different sections. The first section was a financial simulation game, in which individuals were given real-life scenarios and investment tools in order to plan, invest, and achieve the set targets. The team also competed in a four-hour economics exam. The final section of the Olympiad consisted of a team business case study, where the team came fourth, out of over the thirty teams competing in the competition.

At the medal ceremony, Abhinav Chawla was awarded a silver medal. Overall, the New Zealand team came away with one gold medal, one silver medal, and one bronze medal. This is a tremendous achievement for the team.

The team travelled into the centre of St Petersburg, where they were able to visit the State Hermitage Museum, St Isaac’s Cathedral, as well as take a boat tour around the city centre. Additionally, the team was able to visit a large Coca-Cola factory and the Moscow Exchange Centre, and try traditional Russian cuisine.

Many thanks to Mrs Ladkoo, for her continued guidance and support, as well as former student Yang Fan Yun (Snell House 2014 - 2018), who accompanied the team as a team leader to St Petersburg.
