Macleans College fencers achieved two medal-winning performances at the Northern Secondary Schools Fencing Championships, with gold in Men’s Foil and silver in Men’s Sabre.

The tournament also provided valuable competition experience for the school’s developing fencers.

Held earlier this month, the Northern Secondary Schools Fencing Championships marked the final competition of the 2026 Northern Schools regional fencing season and provided important preparation for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Fencing Championships, which will be held at the end of this month.

Macleans College was well represented throughout the tournament, with several younger fencers competing against more experienced opponents. The event provided an opportunity for them to develop their skills and gain valuable competition experience.

Maxwell Chen (Upham House) produced a standout performance, winning gold in the Men’s Foil division. Harry Zhou (Upham) also achieved an excellent result, taking silver in Men’s Sabre.

Year 10 student Jason Nie’s (Upham) sixth place finish in Men’s Foil was another strong result for the school and highlighted the progress being made by younger fencers.
