Macleans College student sails to success in Italy

Year 9 Macleans College student Callum Noyer (Mansfield House) recently travelled to Follonica, Italy to represent New Zealand in the 2023 RS Feva World Championships, along with his teammate Callum Hyde (Botany Downs Secondary College).

The boys were one of 209 teams competing in this event during the European heatwave where temperatures got up over 38 degrees Celsius. After battling through four qualifying races where they managed two race wins, the Callum’s were promoted into the gold fleet ranked second overall.

Day three was a tough day for the boys as the wind speeds picked up to around 28 knots. This made racing conditions difficult as the teammates had a combined weight of less than 90kgs and were competing against 17 and 18 year olds who were better able to handle their boats in the windy conditions. The boys dropped down into 15th place after four very tough races.

Day four was much lighter and the boys managed another race win as well as two other great races which promoted them back up to sixth place overall. The final day ended with another two great races where the boys finished fourth overall and first in the junior category which comes with the title of the 2023 RS Feva Junior World Champions.
