Two Macleans College students recently represented New Zealand at the Australian and Oceania Junior Fencing Championships held in Melbourne.

Year 11 student Larry Lin (Batten House) and Year 12 student Matt Wang (Mansfield) made the trip across the Tasman Sea to participate in this international event.

Facing 33 top Australian under-20 fencers, Larry showcased exceptional skill in his individual foil pool bouts, winning five out of six. After securing the 7th seed after the pool bouts, he continued to battle hard, finishing 13th in the individual competition.

Larry was selected as a member of the New Zealand A team, bringing home a silver medal in the Junior Men’s Foil teams event.

Matt, in his first international event, fought valiantly, gaining invaluable experience in the process.

Larry and Matt showed great dedication in their fencing. They represented their school and country proudly, setting a high standard for the Macleans College Fencing team in 2024.

Both students are now looking forward to Commonwealth Games selection championships, to be held in Christchurch in June.

Aspiring fencers are invited to join the high-performance Macleans College fencing team this year. Keep an eye on the student daily notices to be a part of the exciting journey ahead.
