An unforgettable encounter with Macbeth: Year 10 live theatre trip

For Year 10 English students at Macleans College, studying Macbeth in Term 2 provides an opportunity to explore the development of language and theatre.
This term, students took their learning beyond the classroom with a live performance by Auckland Theatre Company.
More than 500 Year 10 students attended the Friday matinee at the ASB Waterfront Theatre. The large-scale production featured a 30-member cast and brought Shakespeare’s play to life through an immersive underground bunker-style set.
The production included several striking elements, including child actors portraying the three witches, a dramatic soundtrack and a humorous Porter who directly interacted with the audience. These creative choices gave students a fresh perspective on the play and its characters.
The performance was followed by a Q&A session, giving students the opportunity to engage directly with the cast. Tyler Zhang (Te Kanawa House) asked about the differences between acting for stage and screen, while Chloe Zhang (Snell) asked about rehearsal schedules and production preparation. Misaki Nakanishi (Mansfield) was interested in how the actors conveyed subtle aspects of their characters.
Seeing Macbeth performed live gave students the opportunity to experience Shakespeare's work in a new way. The performance and Q&A provided a valuable extension of their classroom learning and offered a memorable encounter with the play beyond the page.
