A historic first: Macleans College kapa haka group performs at Polyfest

This year, for the first time in Macleans College’s history, a selection of 37 students from the wider kapa haka group performed at the ASB Polyfest under the name Te Aka Kotahi (the growing vine).
The students dedicated Term 1 to preparation, completing more than 120 hours of practice. Their focus was on ensuring the school was represented at this prestigious event.
The journey began almost 18 months earlier with planning and organisation. The group learned the words, music and actions for seven items in their kapa haka bracket.
Although few students had prior experience in kapa haka performance at this level, and many were not fluent in te reo Māori, the group achieved outstanding results. One highlight was a score of 99 out of 100 awarded by a judge for the poi item featuring soloist Gladness Saumani (Kupe House).
Led by student leaders Phoebe Kerr (Hillary) and Gladness Saumani, the group performed items that introduced Te Aka Kotahi to the Polyfest stage. They also acknowledged the contributions of previous kapa haka groups in the school’s history. The main kaupapa was that current success is built on the foundations laid by those who came before.
Acknowledgement is due to the students for their commitment throughout Term 1. Many balanced significant workloads to focus on this mahi. Appreciation is also extended to the teaching staff who provided support behind the scenes - particularly Ms Wood, Mrs Marnewick, Ms Tuialii and Mr Reed.
Finally, recognition is given to the Principal Mr Hargreaves and the Board for their ongoing encouragement and support which played an important role in the success of this kaupapa.
