Howick Village Eco Day and Macleans Park planting

Macleans College Enviro Group students were recently involved in two community events.

A group of students represented the school at the Howick Village Eco Day. They prepared products for sale and to raise awareness of the importance of bees. The students made beeswax wraps and decorated pots with seed kits for bee friendly plants. The stall was well supported by the public. The students involved were Sophia Birdling (Hillary House), Ngoc Mihn Bui (Upham), Laney Viljoen (Kupe), Suzie Kim (Snell), Manleen Kaur (Hillary), Renee Cortes (Snell), Aleena Waqar (Snell), Sally Liang (Snell) and Gemma Ironside (Mansfield).

In the afternoon another group of students planted about two hundred native trees to prevent erosion in Macleans Park. The Enviro Group works actively on various aspects of restoration of the park to ensure that native flora and fauna thrive and introduced pests are eradicated. The planting also results in increased water quality in the stream system and this ultimately affects the health of nearby Eastern Beach.

After two hours of heavy work the hungry students were rewarded for their efforts with pizza provided by the organisers. The students involved were Ying Yen Siew (Rutherford), Alice Li (Rutherford), George Lin (Rutherford), Sarujan Yogeswaran (Mansfield), Nikkie Chou (Mansfield), Kelvin Gu (Batten), Jayti Pattni (Rutherford), Anika Pattni (Rutherford), Selena Guo (Batten), Vacha Patel (Batten), Samadiana Fariz (Mansfield), Roy Zhao (Mansfield).
