History-breaking volleyball season

The Junior Boys Volleyball Team have eclipsed the best result in the school’s history, making the top four at the Auckland Junior Volleyball Championships.

The tournament ran for three days at the Bruce Pulman Arena in Takanini with forty-two teams entered for both boys and girls.

On the first day and a half, the Junior Boys Volleyball Team played and won all five games in their pool. This set them up for the quarterfinal with Aorere College, which they won in a very exciting match 25-22, 25-23. The team progressed to a semi-final with Manurewa High School who have won the tournament several times before. Macleans College narrowly lost the first set but came back strongly in the second. In the third and deciding set the large and excited crowd were watching what many said was the best match of the tournament. At 10 all in a race to 15, it could have gone either way but although the team lost they were still very proud of their achievement. Javier Kruger (Te Kanawa House), a co-captain, had an exceptional game and led by example.

The Junior Girls Volleyball Team were in a tough section with Rangitoto College, the eventual winners, and lost their first few games all very narrowly. On the last day they finished strongly to win their last three games and will be a team to watch in the coming years.

This has been perhaps the best year ever for volleyball with eleven teams in total and six at the junior level. The teams have all been coached by current or former students, whose input has been substantial with much time dedicated to the players.

Thank you to former students Randy Jiang (Te Kanawa 2014 – 2018) and Dominic Thompson (Rutherford 2016 – 2020), current students Lize-Mari Beer (Snell), Stephanie Chong (Upham), Kryxen Reyes (Kupe) and Aiden Zhang (Kupe) and the Teacher in Charge of Volleyball Mr Becroft.
