Geographers learn first-hand how rubbish creates energy

On Monday 25 March A Level Geography students travelled to Hampton Downs Landfill and Biogas Station to learn how they create energy from rubbish.

Students were first given a presentation by the station manager about the history of the site, the precautions that they have taken to protect the environment along with how they create biogas energy. The manager also shared the challenges that the station has experienced and how they have overcome them.

After this talk, the student geographer’s were given a tour of the landfill, first to see the different elements that had been discussed, before exploring the generators that turn the gas into electricity.

The odour of the landfill was definitely a new and at times overwhelming sensory experience for the Macleans College students.
