Macleans College’s Premier Chess team narrowly missed a podium finish at the 2026 New Zealand Chess Federation National Interschool Finals - securing fourth place among the country’s top school teams.
Held at Freemans Bay Community Centre in Auckland, the tournament featured seven rounds of rapid chess. Players had 25 minutes per game, with an additional five seconds per move.
The team comprised Charlie Huang (Batten House), Zoey Huang (Batten), Kelvin Wang (Hillary), Alex Pan (Hillary) and Minh Nguyen (Upham). They scored 10 match points across the tournament, finishing just outside the top three after the tiebreaks.
Kelvin delivered an outstanding individual performance, scoring 6.5 points out of a possible seven. He also achieved the highest score on board three.
Thank you to Mr Chang and Mr Yang for their support in organising the team’s participation and accompanying the students throughout the competition.
