Macleans College Sailing team has finished fourth overall at the 2026 JetPark Secondary Schools Interdominion Team Racing Championships - narrowly missing out on a podium place by just one point.
The championships brought together the top three open secondary school sailing teams from New Zealand and Australia for an international team racing competition. Macleans College was the only co-educational school in the fleet, competing against strong boys’ school teams from both sides of the Tasman.
Representing Macleans College were Madi Russell (Snell House), Martina Beavis (Kupe), Callum Noyer (Mansfield), Roberto Beavis (Kupe), Lauchy Wills (Rutherford), Will Noyer (Mansfield) and Charlie Haxton (Hillary).
Entering the championship as underdogs, the team rose to the challenge with a series of strong performances. Across three days of close racing and changing conditions, the sailors secured impressive wins over Westlake Boys High School and The Hutchins School from Australia.
Macleans College finished fourth overall, just one point behind third-placed Westlake Boys High School. The result was a strong achievement against some of the best school sailing teams from New Zealand and Australia and one the team should be proud of.
The championships also provided valuable experience for the sailors as they competed at an international level. Close racing, changing tactical situations and unfamiliar opponents provided a valuable test for the team and an opportunity to compete against some of the best school sailors from New Zealand and Australia.
The team’s success was supported by the outstanding commitment of alumnus Tim McCulloch (Rutherford House 2019 - 2023). Tim has dedicated significant time to organising, coaching and preparing the sailors throughout the national and interdominion championships. His sailing knowledge, experience and enthusiasm have made an important contribution to the team’s development and success.
Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding international result and a successful end to the school sailing season.
Congratulations also to Auckland Grammar School, which won the overall Open Interdominion title.
