Former students win big at 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards

Former Macleans College students Elizabeth Stokes (Kupe House 2004 – 2008) and Jonathan Pearce (Te Kanawa House 2003 – 2007), members of indie pop band The Beths won three categories at the 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards.

The event was held at Spark Arena on Sunday 15 November.  The Beths received the Album of the Year award for their second album Jump Rope Gazers.  Upon receiving the award Elizabeth Stokes said “I can’t express how much it means to me.  We’re surrounded right here in this room by so many incredible, incredible artists and I feel really proud”.

They also won awards for the Best Group and Best Alternative Artist, for the second year running.

The Beths will be playing at the Outer Fields festival, Western Springs on 6 March.  And a tour of the UK, Europe and the USA has been re-scheduled for 2021.

Former student Lepani Tuifagalele (Mansfield House 2009 – 2013) received his first nomination at the awards in the Soul/R&B category.  2020 has seen Lepani release his first EP In The Moment.  He will be playing at Rhombus Café & Bar, Howick on Saturday 28 November.
