Former Student wins Wallace National Piano Competition

The Biennial Wallace National Piano Competition was held last month at the University of Auckland’s Music Theatre.  

Former Macleans College students Frank Chen (Rutherford House 2009 – 2013), Michael Li (Hillary House 2014 - 2018), Tony Yan Tong Chen (Mansfield House 2013 - 2017) and Jessica Chi (Snell House 2015 – 2019), were among the fifteen of New Zealand’s finest young pianists participating in the event.

After two rounds of thirty-minute recitals, four performers were selected for the grand final to compete for prizes totalling over $20,000.  

The first prize of $10,000 was awarded to Tony Yan Tong Chen with Frank Chen awarded the third prize of $3,000 and also $1,000 for the best performance of a classical sonata.
