First Place in New Zealand Secondary Schools Golf Nationals

Macleans College won the NOMADS New Zealand Secondary Schools Golf Nationals, held recently in Palmerston North. 

They won the tournament by six strokes, an impressive margin in a game of golf.

The team consisted of Jimmy Zheng Year 12 Hillary House, Vivian Lu Year 9 Batten, Connor Barker Year 13 Mansfield and Henry Wang Year 10 Batten.

Jimmy Zheng was the best player on the day. He scored 12 under par, to set a new course record. Jimmy, aged 16 has been selected for the 2018 Youth Olympics to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October. His performance in the tournament showed why he had been selected.

St Peter’s School from the Waikato came second and Burnside High School from Christchurch, third.

After the Secondary Schools Competition, eight students competed in the National Age Group Tournament.  Vivian Lu, Jimmy Zheng, Connor Barker, Henry Wang and Jarrod Millar made the cut to play in the final day.  Henry Wang came third in the Under 15 Boys Division and Vivian Lu was the joint winner in the Under 15 Girls Division.

The Macleans College golf team’s successes in 2018 have been impressive. Team 2 were the winners of the Division 2 Nine Holes League. The Premier Team were winners of the Auckland Nine Hole league and Auckland Secondary Stroke Play Championship. They also were winners of the North Island Nine Holes League, as well as their recent win in Palmerston North.

Their individual achievements have included:

  • Oscar Cowley-Andrea (Te Kanawa) coming third in the Auckland Secondary School Stroke Competition in the Nett Division.
  • Vivian Lu won the Akarana Open in Auckland.
  • Jimmy Zheng won the South Island Under 19 Competition and the Ryan Moore Junior Tournament in the USA.
