Macleans College fencers made a strong impression at two recent regional tournaments, showing impressive growth and determination.

Macleans College entered the largest number of fencers in both events - a clear sign of the sport’s growth within the school. For many students, this was their first experience in formal competition.

On Sunday 8 June, Macleans College entered three men’s sabre teams and one women’s sabre team in the Fencing North Secondary School Sabre and Epee Teams competition. The senior men’s team competed strongly, narrowly losing 43-45 to a more experienced opponent. The women’s team - Clare Wang (Mansfield House), Yunmin Lee (Rutherford), Cecilia Ma (Mansfield) and Bailey Young (Upham) - performed exceptionally well and have been selected to represent the Auckland region at the National Championships in Christchurch this August.

On Sunday 15 June, the school entered three men’s foil teams and one women’s foil team in the Fencing North Secondary School Teams Foil competition. Most of the participants were new to this level of competition and gained valuable experience. The senior men’s team - Matt Wang (Mansfield), Larry Lin (Batten), Stacy Chong (Snell) and Maxwell Chen (Upham) - won silver and will also represent Auckland at the National Championships in August.
