Macleans College drama students experience Waiora Te Ūkaipō – The Homeland

Year 11-13 drama students from Macleans College recently attended Auckland Theatre Company’s Waiora Te Ūkaipō – The Homeland.
The theatre was filled with students from across Auckland. On arrival, the atmosphere buzzed with wana (excitement) and anticipation. From the first moments of lighting, sound and stage entrance, it was clear the students were in for a remarkable experience.
Waiora Te Ūkaipō – The Homeland explores the themes of immigration, belonging, racism and the identity of tangata whenua (people of the land) in Aotearoa New Zealand. The cast delivered the Theatre Aotearoa text with exceptional skill and sensitivity. Standout performances came from the main cast of seven, as well as the ensemble portraying kēhua/tīpuna roaming the stage.
The audience responded with laughter, tears, haka tautoko (Māori ceremonial chant) and post-show discussions. The play offered a timely reminder of the importance of upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and highlighted the extraordinary work within Toi Māori kaupapa (Māori arts initiatives).
