Continued Success in Auckland Mathex Competition

Posted on August 28, 2018

The Auckland Mathematics Association’s Annual Mathex Competition was held recently at the Barfoot and Thompson Arena in Kohimarama.

Previous Macleans College teams have achieved at least one first place for each of the last six years and this year the success continued with the Year 10B team (all from Snell House) of Nicholas Lianto, Marcus Ambler (both Year 9 winners in 2017), Joshua Tan and Oliver Dai achieving 100 points within the half hour time limit. They were the only Year 10 team able to produce this result.

The Year 10A team were in a four-way tie-break for third place but missed out on a podium finish.  In addition the two Year 9 teams consisting of Jack Chen (Rutherford), Hosea Tong-Ho (Mansfield), Regina Yun (Upham), Nancy Chen (Rutherford) and James Hui, Rick Wang, Guang Fan, and Kevin Lin both (all Rutherford) managed to achieve 100 points but were beaten by one other school so ended up with a second and a third place, respectively.

Thanks are due to the excellent coaching by many former Mathex competitors from Years 12 and 13 supported by the manager, Mrs Carlson.
