Commendable Performances at Mathex Competition

Posted on August 28, 2019

The Macleans College Mathex Teams recently competed in the Auckland Mathematics Association’s Annual Casio Mathex Competition held at the Barfoot and Thompson Arena in Kohimarama.

Over one hundred teams for each level participated in this challenging contest which featured twenty questions that needed to be completed in 30 minutes.

Continuing the success of previous years, all four Macleans College teams produced commendable performances, managing to finish with the maximum score of 100 points. Unfortunately, the Year 9 teams narrowly missed a podium finish, with the A and B teams finishing at the 5th and 6th positions. In the Year 10 competition, the A and B teams tied for 3rd place, creating a tie-breaker round in which the A team won and maintained their 3rd place position.

The podium placing Year 10 A team consisted of Guang Hao Fan, James Hui, Kevin Lin, and Jack Chen, all from Rutherford House.

The Mathex programme at Macleans College is led by senior students and supported by the manager Mrs Carlson. These students, who are also past competitors, are responsible for the selection and coaching of the teams in their preparation for the annual competition.
