The Macleans College Climbing team made a strong start to the Auckland College Climbing Series, competing in the first of four events at Extreme Edge alongside 199 students from 30 Auckland schools.

Eighteen Macleans College students took part, with many experiencing their first-ever climbing competition.

Despite initial nerves, six climbers placed in the top eight of their divisions and qualified for the finals.

The finals followed a demanding format. Competitors were shown the climbing route only moments before starting, testing their ability to think quickly and stay composed under pressure.

In the Senior Boys division, Klaas Kamp (Kupe House) delivered a focused and powerful performance, securing an impressive second place out of 58 competitors.

Jasmine Hu (Mansfield) achieved her first podium finish, earning a well-deserved bronze medal in the Senior Girls category.

Among the standout moments was Vicky Wang’s (Mansfield) performance. After a disappointing fall during qualifications, she recovered and earnt a spot in her first finals round.

Zach Munro (Mansfield) placed 12th in the Junior Boys category - an impressive debut that signals strong potential. Ashton Phillips (Kupe) also performed well, finishing 10th and narrowly missing the top eight.

Top results included:

  • Klaas Kamp: second in Senior Boys
  • Louis Li (Mansfield): eighth in Senior Boys
  • Eric Shen (Hillary): fifth in Junior Boys
  • Jasmine Hu: third in Senior Girls
