World title for Macleans College cheerleader at ICU Championships

Posted on May 21, 2025

Year 11 Macleans College student Greer Nicholas (Snell House) has returned to school as a world champion after competing at the ICU World Cheerleading Championships.

Last month Greer travelled to Orlando, Florida as a member of Team New Zealand. She and the Youth All-Girl Median team delivered deduction-free performances, earning both a gold medal and championship ring. This is the first time in 10 years that a New Zealand team has secured first place.

The championships brought together teams from around the world to compete in various cheerleading and dance divisions. Organised by the International Cheer Union, the ICU World Championships are recognised as the official global competition for the sport.

Greer has been involved in cheerleading for five years and is a member of the All Star Cheerleaders Fame club.

Cheerleading continues to grow in popularity in New Zealand. Macleans College established its own cheer group in 2021. Last year, the team won gold in the Grade 4 division at the Spring Carnival and School Spectacular competition.
