Celebrating Matariki: Macleans College visits Pigeon Mountain Primary School

Posted on June 19, 2025

As part of the Matariki celebrations at Pigeon Mountain Primary School, nearly 100 members of Macleans College’s Kapa Haka group took a hikoi to the primary school to perform for students.

The group performed three items, including two waiata and a haka. One of the waiata featured soloists Gladness Saumani (Kupe House), a former Pigeon Mountain Primary School student and Wairaka Herbert (Te Kanawa), whose siblings attend the school - adding a meaningful whānau connection to the performance.

The Macleans College students were praised for their professionalism, strong vocal delivery and precise timing.

To continue the celebration of Māori New Year, the group gave an encore performance during House assembly, this time for Te Kanawa and Kupe Houses in the school gym.

Over the past four years, the Kapa Haka group has continued to grow in both size and strength. The future looks bright for this large and growing community within Macleans College.
