From classroom to campaigns: Spark’s Hannah Bay inspires Business Studies students

Posted on March 26, 2026

Year 13 Business Studies students at Macleans College recently welcomed guest speaker Hannah Bay, Brand Experience Lead at Spark New Zealand.

Drawing on her first-hand experience in brand marketing, Hannah shared practical examples that helped students connect classroom learning with the realities of working in a large organisation.

Through an overview of her role, students learned how marketing campaigns are developed to build meaningful connections with target audiences.  Hannah explained that successful campaigns rely on collaboration, creative thinking and careful strategic planning.  This gave students a clearer understanding of how ideas move from initial concepts to fully realised promotional activity.

A key learning point was the challenge organisations face when trying to influence customer choices in competitive markets.  Students gained insight into how companies use data, market research and innovative campaign ideas to stand out and encourage customers to consider new products or services.

Using the example of a large-scale live gaming event organised by Spark, Hannah demonstrated the level of long-term planning and coordination required to deliver impactful brand experiences.  She also introduced the ways modern technology, including artificial intelligence tools, support idea development and decision-making.  Students discovered how organisational skills and attention to detail are needed to manage major marketing initiatives.

Practical examples such as the promotion of youth-focused mobile plans further reinforced students’ understanding of target markets and purchasing influences.

Students Vani Patel (Rutherford House) and Aastha Trivedi (Snell) said Hannah’s visit helped them see how classroom theory connects to real-world marketing.  They feel more confident applying marketing concepts to their own assessments and were inspired by the variety of career paths in marketing, as well as the role of strategic thinking and planning in creating successful campaigns.
