Budding business analysts win Stock Pitch competition

Alex Ly, Allan Han, Arnav Shreyakar (all from Batten House), and Shafquat Tabeeb (Mansfield) recently represented Macleans College at the Forsyth Barr High School Stock Pitch Competition.

Run by the University of Auckland Investment Club, the competition consisted of a preliminary round on Saturday 10 September. Teams were required to critically analyse and creatively pitch a New Zealand stock on the NZX under immense time pressures to senior executives of the Investment Club.

Team Macleans pitched Summerset, a retirement village and aged care service provider. Executives commended their comprehensive presentation, noting its quality was 'on par with first year analysts'. Only the top five teams were considered for the final round, with Macleans making the cut.

The finals round took place on Monday 12 September at the Forsyth Barr Head Office. Here, teams presented the 5 minute pitch to a panel of industry professionals, followed by a Q&A session. Competition was stiff, with formidable teams from schools such as Rangitoto College and Kristin School, as well as difficult questions from the judges.

Fortunately, the preparation Macleans had prior to the finals propelled them to a compelling presentation, thoroughly impressing the judges. As a result, Team Macleans came away winners of the competition, receiving the first place cash prize of $800, as well as Shafquat Tabeeb being awarded “Best Q&A”, winning a further $50.

Thank you to Mrs Guthrie for helping to organise the logistics of this event.
