Year 12 Biology students explore zonation at Waiti Bay

Year 12 Biology students from Macleans College recently took part in a hands-on coastal field investigation at Waiti Bay, near Kawakawa Bay. 

The focus of the trip was zonation.  This is the pattern of where different organisms live in distinct bands across a rocky shore.  It is a key concept in marine ecology and forms part of the NCEA Level 2 Biology programme.

Working in small teams, students used scientific field equipment such as quadrats, transect lines and species guides to survey life across the intertidal zones.  They surveyed the intertidal zone from the upper shore to the water’s edge.  During this process they recorded the presence and abundance of organisms, including barnacles, limpets, sea snails and various seaweeds.

The fieldwork allowed students to observe how environmental factors influence the distribution of species.  They experienced the effects of tidal changes, wave exposure, sunlight and temperature across the shore.  This helped them develop a clear understanding of adaptation, survival and competition.  This practical experience helped bring ecological theory into a real-world setting and made abstract concepts more accessible and meaningful.

Back at school, students will analyse the data collected during the trip.  They will identify patterns in species distribution and connect their findings to biological ideas such as niches, tolerance ranges and species interactions.  This work contributes to an internal assessment on investigating patterns in ecological communities.

The visit to Waiti Bay provided an opportunity to reinforce classroom learning.  It also helped students develop skills in teamwork, data collection, observation and analysis.
