Barbershop National Finals

On Wednesday 11 September 64 Macleans College students travelled to Christchurch to perform at the Barbershop National Finals.

Two quartets; Daydreamin’ (Josephine Law of Batten House, Emily Rush of Te Kanawa, Wei Tian Teo of Rutherford, Annika Lee of Snell) and Three and a Half Basses (John Yang of Hillary, Kevin Hou of Upham, Kay Tang of Snell, Rayman Tang of Rutherford) performed on Wednesday in a very strong field of women’s, men’s and mixed groups from throughout the country.

Three and a Half Basses managed to impress the judging panel enough to gain a creditable 4th place in the competition.

Maccappella, the girls’ barbershop chorus opened the chorus competition on Thursday to defend their national title under the direction of Melody Lowe.  Despite some slick and precise choreography, the girls were unable to fend off the strong challenges from the mid and lower North Island this year, finishing in 6th place overall.

Nevertheless, the girls, together with Three and a Half Basses, brought Christchurch Airport to a standstill on Friday morning as they joined forces with a quartet of boys from Mount Roskill Grammar School to perform for arriving and departing passengers.
