Chinese new year function 001

On Friday 27 January, more than 80 Chinese families and over 250 guests attended a Macleans College function to celebrate the Lunar New Year at a local Chinese restaurant.

MP for Pakuranga Mr Simeon Brown was present at the function, as well as Principal Mr Steven Hargreaves, Deputy Principal Mrs Tina Mair, School Board Presiding Member Mr Richard Wilkie, and Board members – Mr Richard Spong, Mr Anson Li, Mr John Ling and Ms Clare Barrett.

Mr Hargreaves expressed his warmest welcome to all the guests and thanked the Chinese parents and students for their amazing efforts and achievements in the academic and extra-curricular areas of the school. Chinese students form a large portion of the Macleans College student population.

The Macleans College Lion Dance group launched the start of the function with their wonderful performance. Traditionally, Lion Dance is performed to bring good luck and fortune to those who witness it, which is auspicious to welcome the new Lunar Year of the Rabbit.

The Chinese Girls Dance group also participated. They performed two dances, Mei Ren Guan and Mang Zhong. The students felt honoured to perform on such an important cultural occasion, and they really enjoyed the celebration and dinner.

The evening was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the Chinese community and embrace their culture.
