Silver fleet triumph at Auckland Secondary Schools Team Sailing
Posted on April 03, 2025
A team of 13 Macleans College students competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Team Sailing Championships last week at Royal Akarana Yacht Club.
Team sailing is a dynamic 3v3 boat race where strategy and teamwork are crucial to secure the lowest total placing scores. Macleans College entered two teams in the regatta, racing against 20 schools.
The regatta began with a qualifying round. Macleans College Red placed second in their pool, tying on points with Auckland Grammar School A and earning an automatic promotion to the gold fleet. Macleans College Blue finished third, advancing to the repechage race for the final gold fleet spot. Despite a strong effort, they lost this race and were placed in the silver fleet.
On the second day, steady 10-knot south westerly winds made for close, competitive races. Macleans College Blue narrowly lost to Botany Downs Secondary College A but remained unbeaten in their other pool races. Macleans College Red faced tough competition but secured victories against Diocesan School for Girls and Takapuna Grammar School.
The final day brought rain squalls and consistent south westerly winds, adding to the challenge. Macleans College Red finished eighth overall in the gold fleet after a series of tightly contested races. Meanwhile, Macleans College Blue excelled, winning the silver fleet outright.
A special thank you to the parent volunteers for their invaluable support, both on and off the water, especially those who helped with support vessels.
