Auckland Junior Volleyball Championships 2020

Macleans College students recently competed in the Auckland Junior Volleyball Championships held at the Pulman Arena in Takanini.

Two teams, one each of boys and girls participated in the event. It is the largest which College Sport runs with a record 34 boys’ teams and 48 girls’ teams competing.

Eight out of the nine boys were Year 9 but they still managed to beat one of the premier teams from Westlake Boys’ High School, in their first game.  This meant that if they could beat Massey High School they would go into the top 16.  Unfortunately they did not achieve this but still finished 7th in Division 2, which was higher than their seeding.  The top two players were Jamie Carville (Snell House) and Justin Ramos (Hillary).  Special thanks to the coach Randy Jiang.

Three out of the nine girls were from Year 9.  They played exceptionally well and won two very good matches, playing against Baradene College and Papatoetoe High School.  The stand-out player was Hana Rose, Year 10 and already the captain.  Levi De Jong (Snell) coached the team all season but could only make one of the three days due to examinations.  Many thanks to Ms Rose for her volleyball background and help during the three-day championships.

Special mention to three Year 11’s Lize-Mari Beer (Snell), Cameron Burns (Te Kanawa) and Jay Punimata (Snell) who came to help. They were excellent role models.
