Success on the water for Macleans College at Auckland Fleet Racing Championships

Macleans College sailors achieved excellent results at the Auckland Secondary Schools Fleet Racing Championships on Friday 6 March, securing several podium finishes across multiple fleets.
Twelve students travelled to Wakatere Boating Club at Narrow Neck Beach to compete in the event, representing the school with enthusiasm, sportsmanship and pride.
The morning was spent preparing boats and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere typical of school sailing events. Sailors rigged their boats, passed around a rugby ball on the beach, and caught up with competitors from other schools while waiting for the seabreeze to arrive.
By midday, a steady 7-knot southerly breeze filled in. Combined with an outgoing tide, it created challenging racing conditions. The sea remained relatively flat and the weather was fine. However, the shifting breeze and tidal flow required sailors to think carefully about their tactics and boat handling throughout the afternoon’s racing.
Macleans College enjoyed an excellent day on the water. Congratulations to:
- Holly and Stella Robson (Snell House) – third overall in the RS Feva fleet and second female team
- Lauchy Wills (Rutherford) – first overall in the P Class fleet
- Will Noyer (Mansfield) – second overall in the P Class fleet
- Jessica Spalek (Upham) – first female in the P Class fleet
- Callum Noyer (Mansfield) – third overall in the Starling fleet
A special mention goes to Izzy Harrison (Hillary), who sailed consistently throughout the regatta and narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth female in the Starling fleet.
Events such as this rely on the support of the wider sailing community. Macleans College extends its thanks to the parents who helped transport boats to and from the event. Special thanks also go to Eddy Spalek, who drove the BBYC support boat and ensured the sailors were safe and supported on the water.
Three regattas remain before the season concludes in mid-April and the sailors look forward to building on these results.
