The Macleans College 1st XI Girls Cricket team recently competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Division 2 tournament.

On the first day, the team faced Selwyn College in the morning - who later emerged as tournament champions. In the afternoon match, Macleans College narrowly lost to Lynfield College in the final over. Despite the defeat, a standout performance by Sienna van Vuuren (Rutherford House), who took 6 wickets for 18 runs, lifted team morale heading into day two.

With a place in the semi-finals at stake, the team aimed for a strong victory over Diocesan School for Girls. Ayaan Lambat (Batten) led a commanding batting performance, scoring an incredible 131 runs (not out) from just 58 balls. This remarkable effort helped Macleans College to qualify for the semi-finals against Saint Kentigern College.

In the semi-final, Macleans College delivered a solid bowling performance, dismissing Saint Kentigern College for 122 runs. However, the team fell short in their run chase and missed out on a place in the final.

On day three, Macleans College faced Rutherford College in the third-place playoff. After winning the toss, Macleans College chose to bat first, scoring 109 runs for the loss of just 3 wickets at the end of 20 overs. The team then put on an excellent fielding and bowling display, taking all 10 wickets in 16 overs to win by 49 runs and secure third place.

Ayaan Lambat was the tournament’s top run scorer for Macleans College, followed by Kaitlyn Rawlings (Te Kanawa) and Zoe Matchett (Rutherford). Top wicket takers were Sienna van Vuuren followed by Ayaan Lambat and Thisuri Gunasekara (Batten).

The team has shown significant improvement since the beginning of the Term 1 A Grade session and looks forward to continuing their progress in Term 4.
