Macleans College student launches wellbeing initiative to strengthen school connections

Year 12 international student Arthur Fang (Batten House) has established the Good Morning Campaign at Macleans College, a student-led initiative promoting connection and belonging within the school community.
The campaign encourages positive morning interactions that help students feel welcomed and included. Arthur explains, ‘We're building a community where all young people — introverted or extroverted — can experience belonging in the real world, not just the virtual one’.
The campaign includes several simple daily rituals.
Morning engagement and lolly stand
Student volunteers welcome students at the school gates each week with greetings and small treats.
The Good Morning handshake
An optional gesture that encourages positive connection between students.
Good Morning whiteboard
A space for students to share reflections and encouraging messages.
Let it go box
An anonymous box where students can leave worries or concerns before the school day begins.
Morning videos
Student-created videos share positive messages online each weekday morning.
Arthur told the Education Gazette that the idea was inspired by his schooling experience in Singapore. ‘When I attended school in Singapore, the teachers would greet students at the door by name and with a high five, which made me feel welcome.’
After studying in several countries, Arthur said he understands the challenges students can face when adapting to a new school and building friendships.
Arthur first presented the idea to Associate Principal Ms Tuialii, who supported the initiative and suggested trialling it within Batten House. Since then, Arthur has recruited fellow students to help run and develop the campaign.
In an interview with the Education Gazette, Ms Tuialii said Arthur’s leadership has had a positive impact on the school community. ‘Arthur’s approach encourages participation and fosters a positive atmosphere. His work contributes to a sense of connection and boosts overall morale among those involved.’
The experience has also helped Arthur develop his leadership skills and confidence. Alongside leading the initiative, he also serves as an international prefect and peer support leader at the school.
Arthur hopes to expand the Good Morning Campaign into other local schools in the future.
